We decided to build this company because of the increasing enshittification of existing platforms and software. We feel that the internet, software, and to a lesser extent humanity, have strayed far from the path.
For social media, the incentive for profits, clicks, views, and engagement is higher than ever. This breeds problematic behavior, creates poor quality content, distorts reality, and is often harmful to mental health.
For (most) operating systems, you're no longer in control by default. You're tracked in nearly every conceivable way. They're harder to use, harder to install, and they perform and feel noticeably worse than operating systems released decades ago.
We're left with an internet and digital ecosystem that bears very little resemblance to the one that we grew up with.
It's our belief that it's still possible to do things right. There's still hope for a world where:
- Your operating system is responsive, void of bloatware, and doesn't send a constant stream of telemetry data to a cloud provider.
- Your feed is populated only by content from your real friends, not by strangers, influencers, or content farms.
- You can reach the end of a feed. You can choose to log off or contribute your own content instead of being subconsciously coerced into staying on a platform for small bursts of dopamine.
- You are in control of your data and digital presence.
Our principles
- Collect as little as possible, because we can't leak data we don't have.
- Zero third-party trackers, advertising networks, or invasive analytics.
- Sane and safe defaults. You should never have to harden our software yourself or turn knobs, unless you really want to.
- Build reliable software that works as reliably on day 365 as it did on day 1.
- Do less, build it simply, build it right. Reject complexity and bloat; embrace simplicity.
- Prioritize mental health, human connection, and morals over profits.
